The Opportunity

Illinois State University, a nationally ranked public R2 university committed to teaching, scholarship, civic engagement, and inclusive excellence, invites applications and nominations for the position of associate vice president for Faculty Affairs (AVPFA).

Reporting directly to the provost and serving as a key member of the academic leadership team, the AVPFA provides strategic vision, policy leadership, and administrative oversight for all matters related to faculty success across all stages of the academic career. The next AVPFA will join Illinois State University at a pivotal time as the institution advances a bold strategic plan, Excellence by Design, focused on student success, innovation, and institutional transformation. This is a highly collaborative role that requires a forward-thinking and empathetic leader who can partner with academic and administrative leaders to foster an inclusive, high-performing faculty environment that actively supports their development. The position offers an exceptional opportunity to lead institution-wide efforts that promote a thriving faculty community and sustain Illinois State’s commitment to academic excellence.

The AVPFA must possess the ability to work well with colleagues as well as the ability to manage difficult conversations and confidential matters. They must be capable of making independent, fair, and balanced judgments. They have daily contact with college deans, department chairs, and school directors; Office of General Counsel (OGC); Human Resources (HR); Office of Equal Opportunity and Access (OEOA); faculty; and staff.

The ideal candidate for this role should be prepared for potential changes in their portfolio as the institution undergoes a time of transformation. The successful candidate will be a team player who is adaptable and can manage competing priorities effectively while demonstrating flexibility and a collaborative spirit. The next AVPFA should be an individual who exhibits the collegiality, competence, and professionalism of a senior administrator in the Division of Academic Affairs. This individual should understand and be prepared to navigate the rapidly changing landscape of higher education, while contributing to the institution’s evolution and long-term success.
The preferred start date for the position is January 1, 2026.
